The area surrounding Dana Strands Beach is closely tied to the early history of Dana Point. In the 1920s, Ole Hanson began developing the region with the idea of creating a thoughtfully planned coastal community inspired by Mediterranean seaside towns. His influence shaped much of Dana Point’s architectural style and overall feel—elegant, intentional, and deeply connected to the landscape.
While Dana Strands remained more natural than some neighboring beaches, it became part of that broader vision: a place where land, ocean, and community were meant to coexist gracefully. The bluff above the beach gives the area its distinctive look, creating dramatic views while keeping the shoreline feeling protected and peaceful.

When I paint Dana Strands Beach, I’m drawn to its openness and balance. I work in watercolor and ink, which allows me to keep the feeling loose, playful, and full of movement rather than overly precise.
