Hotel Laguna: Laguna Beach’s Historic Landmark

Hotel Laguna is more than a building on the sand — it’s a cornerstone of Laguna Beach’s story. Since its opening in 1888, it has stood as a welcoming place for travelers and a backdrop for the artists, surfers, and dreamers who made Laguna famous.

A Hotel with a Storied Past

The original Hotel Laguna was built in 1888, at a time when Laguna was still a quiet coastal village. Early visitors would arrive by stagecoach or train, drawn to the area’s rugged beauty and pristine shoreline. In 1928, the hotel was completely rebuilt in its current Mission Revival style, the white stucco walls and red-tiled roof echoing California’s Spanish heritage.

For decades, Hotel Laguna was the first stop for anyone visiting town. Guests came for seaside vacations, glamorous weddings, and elegant dinners. It became a social hub — the place to see and be seen in Laguna Beach.

The Famous Rooftop Sign

Longtime residents will remember the giant “HOTEL LAGUNA” sign that once crowned the roof. It was more than a marker — it became an icon of the town itself, greeting visitors as they arrived along Pacific Coast Highway. Although the sign has since been removed, I chose to bring it back into my painting as a way of honoring that piece of Laguna’s past. Art, after all, is not just about capturing what is — but also about remembering what was.

A Link to Laguna’s Artistic Heritage

Laguna Beach has always been an artist’s town, with painters, sculptors, and performers flocking here since the early 1900s. The hotel played its part in that legacy, hosting visitors who came for the Pageant of the Masters, the Festival of Arts, or simply to soak in the same coastal views that inspired generations of artists.

Painting Hotel Laguna felt like joining that tradition. With every brushstroke, I imagined the hotel in different eras: jazz music spilling out of the ballroom in the 1930s, honeymooners arriving in the postwar years, and modern-day families picnicking under colorful umbrellas on the sand.

Hotel Laguna Today

While the hotel has gone through closures, restorations, and new ownership in recent years, it still remains a symbol of Laguna Beach. Its presence on the shoreline is a reminder that some places are timeless — even as they change.

Why I Painted It This Way

I wanted to capture the hotel not just as it stands today, but as it exists in memory. The sign, the umbrellas on the beach, the people passing by — they’re all fragments of time woven into one scene. For me, Hotel Laguna represents continuity: the past, present, and future of a place that means so much to so many.

✨ Whether you know Hotel Laguna for its historic charm, its connection to Laguna’s art scene, or simply as the backdrop to a perfect beach day, it remains one of the most beloved landmarks on the California coast.
